Pictures
of RF Deck Preparation Party
July 12, 2008
N0PBM (not pictured), KV0S, KC0MGG and KM0R worked several hours on the pile of RF decks, preparing them to become APRS trackers. These radios are commercial handheld Maxon (some are branded GE) SP-2550's. They were found to run off 12VDC reliably, despite having an 8VDC battery pack. The battery contacts were removed along with the bottom plate of the radio. The antenna jack was also removed to provide a short pigtail for antenna connection later. The radios were tuned and tested on APRS frequencies, both the national frequency and an off channel frequency often used for special events with high beacon rates. The radios have had new power leads installed with Anderson Power Poles installed to make powering the RF decks from almost any source possible.
Many thanks to Gary, N0PBM for all his
work on the prototypes! He converted the first batch of radios
and figured out all the little details that made this run go so well. Also,
thanks to Brian, KC0MGG and Dave, KV0S for pitching in to get this
batch of radios ready to roll.
